Savannah Georgia Grayson Stadium
On Saturday night August 14, 2010 a great baseball crowd was treated to a spectacle never witnessed before as Ted A. Batchelor was ignited at home plate and ran the 360 ft. around the bases at Historic Grayson Stadium Home of the class A baseall affiliate of the New York Mets (The Sand gnats).
Batchelor was lit by a fan picked from the crowd, Mr. Chris Corey, who lives a few blocks from the stadium. Chris was briefed on the dangers of the torch but insisted he was ready.
The trip took all of about 45 seconds as Batchelor slid into home head first to end the burn. At first base was Gregg Gilkey stunt coordinator--second base safety-Grant Batchelor--at shortstop with a blast of fuel was Matt Rogers--at home was Debby Batchelor and Nina Gilkey with fire suppression. The 3 co2 fire extinguishers were donated by Chris Hendrix of Hendrix Fire Equip. Thank you Chris-Whew!
Batchelor and crew hope to travel the Minor and Major League circuit this summer on to their goal to be lit on fire in every state at least once!
Mr. Batchelor wants to thank Chase Polhemus of the Sand Gnats for hanging in there and "trusting our crew" to complete this 35 year dream. Also Ted thanks the Savannah fire dept. -Fire Marshall and Four Points By Sheraton Hotel Manager Michele Rigilano for helping with transactions to obtain the fire permit.
